Hill Cafe in Church Hill Historic District Main St.
Since it was a warm night, Dan and I decided to hike up from the Bottom to The Hill Cafe in the 2300 Block of East Broad. It was a great walk and fun to look at all the wonderful old homes. We were seated immediately even though the place was packed. They have a full bar and it was jammed with people I assumed probably walked there like us. Dan noticed right away that there was no smoking or at least a lack of it with this crowd. The menu was fairly simple but a good selection. We chose to split a rack of ribs and it they were out of this world great. Dark, tangy sauce and the fall off the bone type you have to eat with a fork. Served with a side of mashed garlic potatoes and asparagus in just the right portion. It was crowded but very warm and cozy. The bathroom was clean and the communal sink for the men and womens bathroom was an interesting touch. Nice art and colors done in a rich tone. We can't wait to go back. Irish Festival this weekend....maybe then? Thanks again Dan for another wonderful idea.

Valentine's Day 2008
Dan and I stayed in and cooked together for Valentine's Day. It was a wonderful time and not having to fight the crowds was almost as good. It was without a doubt the best Valentine's Day I can remember. Thank you Dan!

Dot's Back Inn - Northside Richmond
Wow. I've been told for years to try this place and it was amazing. Located in the heart of Northside on MacArthur Avenue right smack dab in the middle of the neighborhood. This place rocked. Daily specials on a hanging chalkboard above the counter. Definately choose one of these instead of ordering off the menu. My salmon was perfectly cooked and Dan's pork was seasoned well and I loved it. Great sides to boot. We took a yoga class and have visited Shenanigan's Green Pub. A little smokey for us but Dan is a great dancer so it was fun!
Lulu's
Thanks for the comment Karen. We haven't had a chance to get back over there...maybe we won't hurry!

Steak & Ale, Tuesday, January 22
Dan and I were in the West End Tuesday night so he suggested that we try Steak & Ale at Glenside and Broad. He had received gift cards for Christmas and it was always my father's favorite restaurant so why not. Besides, we have fun wherever we go! Established in 1966 and designed to look like an English Country Inn, it's well past time for an update. We were seated immediately upon our arrival at 8pm. I would easily have bet my dessert that it was exactly the same salad bar that was there my last visit and that was 15 years ago. I ordered Prime Rib and Dan had the Nine Pepper Steak. Both were mediocre at best. Dan's shrimp cocktail had the runt of the litter shrimps. The one thing we did enjoy was the Cheesy Garlic Bread. It's baked and served in the same dish and was perfect. The service was good but not excellent. Sorry Dad, 3 out of 10 forks (just for the bread).Thursday, January 17, 2008
Lulu's on 17th Street, Shockoe Bottom, Richmond

Dan and I were finished packing for our trip to Beaver Creek, CO. to try snowboarding somewhere other than Wintergreen, get outdoors and view the Rockies from the seat of a snowmobile. We headed out on a warm Friday evening to LuLu's, a new restaurant located just across from the Farmer's Market on 17th Street. Not realizing we would need a reservation, we gladly gave our name to the hostess for the 45 minute wait and headed to the bar. A modern touch with the lighting and fans, a wonderful view of the kitchen and the hustle of preparing fabulous dishes, gave us plenty to look at and talk about during our wait. The atmosphere is delightfully warm as most people find the renovated warehouses of the Bottom with their old brick walls and exposed beams. LuLu's was conceived by Paul Keevil (pictured with Dan) and chef, Steve Jurina, both behind the favorite Richmond restaurant, Millie's. The bar was very crowded now that the liquor license was in tact, and we talked with the General Manager from Morton's at the bar who was waiting for a table. As time passed, we realized that our early flight would keep us from waiting but we would be back, and next time, not without a reservation. For hours, menus and directions... http://lu-lusrichmond.com/

New Year's Eve at The Original Bookbinders, Shockoe Bottom
It's hard to review a restaurant that's been reviewed so many times. New Year's Eve will put any restaurant to the test so we thought it would be a great time to try it. Our reservations were for 9:00 but we had to extent it and a phone call was all it took. We were seated about 10:15 and visited the bar while we waited. The bartender, Victoria, was very knowledgeable and interesting. Once seated, it was wonderful throughout. The fixed menu had plenty of choices and the service was amazing. The shrimp were very large and fresh. We main course included snap beans and the most fabulous potatoes...my favorite. They have an extensive wine selection but no Viognier (a grape that is on the rise in Virginia). The key lime pie lived up to it's reputation, although I thought the cheesecake left a little to be desired. 8 out of 10 Forks for this one!!!!! And don't forget the valet parking!

Eating Out in the River City
Dan is new to Richmond, lives in the Bottom and is adventurous. I went looking for restaurant reviews for Richmond and couldn't find anything interesting or informative. I thought it would be fun to blog our adventures in eating and share it with anyone interested in reading it. First up...Bonefish on Midlothian...stay tuned.
